WELCOME TO THE UQ ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY
About us
The UQ Ecological Society aims to inspire and educate on the biodiversity and the conservation of ecosystems, particularly around south east Queensland and northern New South Wales. We are based at the University of Queensland, but operate within a large geographic area. UQES operates entirely on unceded and stolen lands. We aim to walk lightly on Aboriginal land and pay our respects to Country as part of our ethos.
The UQ Ecological Society is a university society run by students that unites ecology enthusiasts from all walks of life. We hold social and educational events that are accessible to UQ students as well as the general public. We take a multidisciplinary approach with topics covering cultural awareness, career development, evolution and ecology, species identification, and more. We also like to provide a friendly environment where everyone is welcome to get actively involved, regardless of background or level of experience.
The society has strict policy regarding adherence to its ideals of ethical field conduct and of mutual respect between members. We do not encourage the handling of any animals and are mindful of flash photography on night walks.

Objectives of the Society
To educate and inform
We believe that education is key to inspiring the conservation of all flora and fauna. Therefore, we offer a multifaceted approach by aiming to educate and inform those both within and outside of the Society.
We hold regular seminars with a broad focus. Our guest speakers come from a range of backgrounds to deliver talks on a variety of subjects, including ecology, behaviour, conservation, and evolution of plants and animals.
The Society also aims to establish an environment which actively promotes open discussion and the exchange of information between members. As our members have varying levels of experience, education, and background, the collective wealth of knowledge available to the group is a core asset to the society. We encourage open lines of communication through which members can seek and offer advice on all ecology and conservation matters, including research strategy, career direction, and more.
In addition, the society acts as a platform to connect members in varying stages of their education or career. This promotes development and education through the formation of mutually beneficial networking and the acquisition of valuable skills and experience, as well as facilitating collaborations, promoting research and discovering career opportunities.
To encourage active involvement in ecology and the society
We also believe that it is important to give people the opportunity to have positive interactions with ecosystems in order to develop respect and appreciation for them. Consequently, the society gives all our members the opportunity to participate in practical activities such as low-disturbance wildlife expeditions, night walks, ecological surveying in collaboration with organisations, and many other activities.
Additionally, members are encouraged to contribute to the content and activities of the Society. Members are invited to offer ideas for events, share their own information or experiences, deliver presentations, organise and/or execute activities, or offer their input on the format of the Society.
